Reading through this showers section put me in mind of our trip to Rotherham in October 2004 at Herringthorpe Playing Fields on the outskirts of Sheffield.

After our 5-0 pasting at the hands of some Northern beanpoles, we returned to get changed in a traditional municipal pavilion dating back to probably the 1950s with its wooden structure and solid concrete floor.

Stepping into the huge shower room it felt somewhat nippy. Looking up I realised this was because there was NO ROOF!! Having stripped out of my goalkeeper kit, I felt somewhat small and insignificant gazing up to the grey Northern sky.

Anyway myself and a few hardy others (Sev and Whappa included) decided to join the Rotherham team and take a shower despite the fact that the water was freezing cold. In fact the heat from our bodies was creating steam so it actually looked like the showers were hot.

There were about 15 showers in a long, straight line and as Sev stepped out and grabbed his towel, in strolled BBChris. Despite the 5-0 defeat, he cheerily asked: "Are the showers hot?"

"Yeah, they're lovely", I lied whilst being frozen alive, and the half-dozen or so Rotherham players all played along.

Chris skipped cheerfully into the shower and pressed the button, only to be hit by a frosty torrent which Spider-Man's pal The Iceman could have surfed along on.

"You b*stards!" was all he could stammer. But at least Chris had a shower before our trip to Halifax that afternoon, which is more than can said for a certain M Charles who was in the team that day. Whatever happened to him?

APPEARANCE: 2/10 (6/10 on Northern scale) This was a fine old dressing-room complex once upon a time. Not any more. Makeshift skylight was a nice touch, but one wonders what health and safety might make of it?

SPACE: 10/10 Enough room here to bring your whole family plus whippets in for their monthly scrub-down after a few weeks' hard coal mining.

WATER FLOW: 9/10 Plenty of water gushing out in a constant torrent. Button press interval was very generous.

HEAT: 1/10: Any colder and the water would have been stuck in the pipes.
